Discreet, no party, no extra colour. A candle, a tea, a body butter. Nothing that looks like celebration and nothing that demands a reply.

What not to do

Avoid anything that demands energy — nothing that needs assembling, choosing or deciding. And avoid long cards: one short handwritten line is more than enough.

If you cannot be there
