The right gift for a colleague
This is the hardest gift to get right, and not for lack of choice — for excess of risk. Too personal feels odd. Too cheap looks thoughtless. And anything the person has to put on their skin or in their home forces a taste you do not know.
The rule that solves almost everything
Choose something that gets used up. A tea, a soap, a shower steamer. It gets consumed, nobody has to find a place for it, and nobody is obliged to use it in front of the person who gave it.
What to avoid
- Strong home scents. A diffuser is a decorating decision, and that one is not yours to make.
- Nothing that suggests too much body care. A hand soap is friendly; a massage oil is not.
- Wrapping that is too big. In an office, a gift that forces the person to say thank you in front of everyone is a gift that puts them on the spot.
If it is secret santa
The limit is usually €15 or €20. In that range, presentation is what saves it: a small thing beautifully wrapped reads better than a bigger one that was clearly grabbed in a hurry on the way.
